All That Matters Is Past (2012) @ Uskyld

WOODS RAPE NORWEGIAN SEX rape forest dirt dogging
Full frontals, baby crownings, rotting corpses and jilted lovers.
All that matters is present!

At a glance:
Well whaddya know. It's my first stab at the Toronto International Film Festival and I've picked out a shocker from the leftover schedule. Sara Johnsen's Uskyld (literal: "innocence") is a rather engrossin Norwegian crime drama that cuts close to fart house fare like Lars von Trier's Antichrist (2009) but she masterfully keeps it accessible by framin it as a dodgy love triangle set in the woods. TIFF programmer Steve Gravestock sells it as "part Cain-and-Abel story, part Rousseau-influenced meditation on innocents destroyed by a corrupted society", about childhood sweethearts William (Kristoffer Joner) and Janne (Maria Bonnevie) who are suddenly reunited as adults and inextricably thrust into an idyllic life of peculiar, self-imposed isolation. The past unravels and you can blame it all on William's damaged pervo brother, Ruud (David Dencik). This isn't the horror rehash of Bergman's Summer With Monika (1953) that I thought it was from the trailer. We're taken well into the obscenest ends of R-rated territory, so prepare to squirm in your seats as several cinephiles lacking the requisite intestinal fortitude for it have left the theatre presumably in disgust, as reported by Toronto Film Scene's Jovana Jankovic.
Bad news on the doorstep:

go au naturel in the name of art.
Twitchfilm's Todd Brown didn't fancy it much, decryin its "unlikeable" characters, which he insists are "given no context whatsoever". Man has a point, so it's lucky for us that cinematographer John Andreas Andersen had plenty of filler footage - the proceedings are punctuated by hypnotic visuals of wildlife and whatnot (shot on both 16mm and 35mm). They've even got a couple of special effects done with help from the folks behind Troll Hunter (2010), I think. Anyway, I think what really nibbled at the tension in such a competent and layered film is the unfortunate choice of a non-linear narrative that went back and forth one time too many. Maria Heiskanen from Maria Larsson's Everlasting Moments (2008) provides the narrative voice as a policewoman tryin to piece together the chillin aftermath of what was supposed to be a grippin fable, only that her role contributes little towards the mystery. On the whole, I'd have liked several distractin elements omitted in favour of a tighter, more conventional coming-of-age caper.

ALL THAT MATTERS IS PASTPerennial wonderment:
I'd like to know for certain if I read too much into the prominent depiction of traditionally Satan-affiliated creatures in the film - goats, maggots, ravens to name a few.

I think perhaps it tried a little too hard but I won't begrudge it. I love the music score as well. Definitely diggin up Johnsen's previous works Kissed By Winter (2005) and Upperdog (2009), so here's hopin for more fun and FUBAR material from her in the near future. For a more polished and substantial review, check out ioncinema.com's Nicholas Bell. Here's to hopin this will score a distributor soon and you lot will be able to find it on a DVD shelf between The Cement Garden (1993) and Dumplings (2004), if not at the cinemas proper.★★★

Los Bastardos (2008)

Jesus Moises Rodriguez in a spot of sexual servitude for White America.
All in a day's work.
At a glance:
Variety's eloquent Todd McCarthy has called this is a "nihilistic high-art film marked by fashionable static takes, banal minimalist dialogue, glacial pacing and ultra-violence", consistin of "long stretches of dreary quotidian activity shrouded in dread due to something very bad you know is coming, all in the interests of presenting a rigorously reductive slice of earthly hell." So perish all thoughts of this bein an artsier A Better Life (2011). Mexican helmer Amat Escalante sees fit to put us through 98 minutes of said elements, a slow and curious examination into the taken-for-granted comforts of American life. We have hard hombre Jesus (Jesus Moises Rodriguez) and the younger, angrier Fausto (Rubén Sosa) waitin by the road to be picked up for illegal day labour by shortchangin gringos. Up until this point, you'd think this was an immigrant documentary. Then it turns into an R-rated home invasion thriller, involvin a single mother (Nina Zavarin) and her son (Trevor Glen Campbell). It has been described as a movie that builds up to just one moment of very realistic violence.
Los Bastardos 2008 violent gun crime Auroro Colorado Batman Shooting Jesus Moises Rodriguez cunninglingus White america Nina Zavarin sad sex pussy licking good Desperate HousewivesBad news on the doorstep:
I'm actually doin my best to make it palatable. The Bastards squeezes into the narrow space that separates pretentious narcissism and high art, always leavin us to wonder just what the intentions of the filmmakers are. Just because a movie is very slow, it doesn't make it deep or meaningful. A decision is required on your part if you succeed in lastin it.
Los Bastardos 2008 violent gun crime Auroro Colorado Batman Shooting Jesus Moises Rodriguez cunninglingus White america Nina Zavarin sad sex pussy licking good Desperate HousewivesPerennial wonderment:
Why does someone in a position of power choose to engage in a spot of sexual servitude? Is this depravity a critique on middle-class American consumerism, as I read? It's disenchanted sex any road. The two lead antagonists are non-pros as well. Wish I could figure it out. There's somethin quite sad to it.
Reminds me of:

Like a fable, but a narrative only for the patient. Don't be fooled by the crime drama packagin from the DVD cover. Somethin very primal about these characters compliments the minimalist technique we see in Michael Haneke and Lars von Trier movies. White America's worst stereotypes about Hispanics fulfilled. Unsettlin, to say the least - but with a stab at redemption near the end.★★1/2

They Wait (2007) @ Demon Days

BoneTown Sex Game
At a glance:
Female ghost with strange black, inky arms.
Here's more on the Chinese Hungry Ghost Festival. They Wait (2007) was a Canadian horror flick that most dismissed as a silly piece of work, produced by the overwhelmingly unpopular Uwe Boll and directed by Ernie Barbarash (Assassination Games, 2011) but I'd like to think the story and screenplay by Trevor Markwart is actually quite solid and intriguin, though the finished product of course, stumbles here and there. Look away now if you don't wanna read a spoiler: besides playin out a mystery that traces back to maligned sweatshop immigrants, it also skims over a topic I don't think any horror movie has ever covered before - inhumane bear farmin! We follow a married inter-racial couple (coincidentally I just watched another Chinese-Caucasian pairin in Seventh Moon last night) as they return to Vancouver for an uncle's funeral after six years abroad in Shanghai. Just as you would expect, it's open season for them starved spirits and their son Sammy (Regan Oey) starts to be able to see them like a Chinese Haley Joel Osment, subsequently fallin prey to one particular mysterious spectre, a female ghost with strange black, inky arms. Sarah (Jaime King) and Jason (Terry Chen) must figure out just what they want before dawn, when the realm of the dead would close up and the kid will be lost forever.
Bad news on the doorstep:
Terry Chen
- what an annoyin actor!
Well, the heart of the mystery is unusual and definitely not cliched but the eerie buildup is undone by some cartoonish CG work, made worse by Terry Chen (The A-Team, 2010) in a superfluous role as the nobody dad. Poor guy was probably miscast because they movie doesn't need him at all. He took too much attention away from Jaime King (Mother's Day, 2011) and made the pair look trivial. I also have a problem with the castin of the kid, whose "Eurasian attributes" go as far as havin dyed brown hair. Come on guys, get real!
Bitter, bitter.
Cured my fever?
Perennial wonderment:
Does bear bile really work? God knows I had a lot as a child. They were nasty. I hope one day the trade will stop. For further readin on the bear bile trade and just how torturous it is for our ursine friends, check out a Facebook fan page or two because that's what people do these days.
Reminds me of:
Kelvin Tong's The Maid (2005).
Watch out for:
Shaw Bros wuxia vet Cheng Pei Pei (Street Fighter: Legend Of Chun-Li, 2009) plays the annoyin aunt with some literal skeletons in the closet. Great to see the golden oldies still gettin work.

Dirty Pretty Things (2002)

At a glance:
Not sure if it inspired the UK band of the same name but Stephen Frears' Dirty Pretty Things (2002) has got to be one of the most enjoyable and durable entertainers that England has ever produced for the international cinema tourist, although you don't read of many wantin cult classic status for it. Steven Knight's Oscar-nominated written work is about "the people you do not see, the ones who drive your cabs, clean your rooms and suck your cocks". Welcome to a London that seriously needs some cleanin up. Welcome to kidney-for-passport programmes, abusive sweatshop owners, oily budget hotel bosses, immigration tough guys and gum-chewin prostitutes with expensive manicures.
Bad news on the doorstep:
Like a foreigner's fable, some may be put off by its decidedly colourful cast - a drunken Russian doorman (Zlatko Burić), a strugglin Nigerian taxi driver-cum-doctor (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a kind-hearted whore of Caribbean descent (Sophie Okonedo), a quirky Chinaman who works at the hospital morgue (Benedict Wong) and a timid Turkish cleaner girl played by Audrey Tautou in her first English-speakin role. The film is necessarily dark because of its morbid theme (literally even, as it's mostly shot at night) and you wouldn't like this if you were expectin some glossy thriller starrin Tautou (pic).
Perennial wonderment:
Can anyone tell me if that herb or shrub that Okwe chews to stay awake and work two shifts?
Reminds me of:
My England days, a time when I could've easily been any one of these characters.
Watch out for:
Well I won't spoil it for you but there's one scene where Okwe's expertise in diagnosin STDs just got in demand. Wait for it!
Most memorable line:
The black whore was so surprised that Senay (Tautou) was still a virgin and exclaimed "Christ!" to which the girl, being Turkish and therefore Moslem, calmly said "No, Mohammed". What a laugh!
Amacam joker, berapa bintang lu mau kasi?
Four stars for a subtle crime drama with a little bit of everythin. It's like watchin the Third World in London.

Introducin spunky Kierston Wareing (pic) as the sexy anti-soccermom with a bad dye-job and a moral dilemma on being Britain's equivalent of a mid-tier snakehead, master director Ken Loach continues his illustrious catalogue of socialist films with It's A Free World..., the title itself already mockin globalisation, commercialism and the ugly shortcomings of the free market.

Kierston Wareing
Bad news on the doorstep:
Even as England grows increasingly unhappy with the Polish influx of illegal workers (sometimes legal) or any other alien Turk, Algerian or Lithuanian for that matter; she scarcely needs the oft-called defector director to produce yet another critical piece of film literature about her problems. However, as even his toughest critics may attest, he does bring a great deal to the table in terms of purposeful and solid didactic filmmakin.
Reminds me of:
The door factory I once worked at.
Most memorable line:
Kierston Wareing nude sex Datin Ghairah Altantuya Shaariibuu Anwar Ibrahim seksi Melayu main 3gp game free download free malay porn apekAs the woman is asked "Is your son better than mine?" by vengeful and desperate workers who are wronged by the system (or at least, her system), audiences should find that Ken Loach has not lost his basic edge in invitin self-question. Social realist cinema still needs Loach, as he pulls off yet another anti-climax, forcin us to understand that his movies never end cinematically because real life doesn't follow cinema logic.

Doesn't pack as much cinematic punch as say, The Wind That Shakes The Barley (2006) or his celebrated masterpiece Kes (1969), which this writer concedes admirin unapologetically. It's decidedly less poignant, perhaps due to the rougher and less romantic nature of today's socio-economic problems compared to those days. For an old man however, he sure does know how to keep up with the times. ★★★

The Shinjuku Incident (2009) @ 新宿事件

"Hi mum. Check out my new girlfriend."
At a glance:
Big Bro Jackie Chan is reluctant hero Steelhead, immigrant Chinese fella who goes to Shinjuku in search for better life and also one-time lover Xiu Xiu (Xu Jing Lei). Sloggin through Jap dirt, he finds friends among those in same boat (quite literally) and works his way into yakuza favour via a few lucky moves, even meetin a mamasan chick along the way (Fan Bing Bing). Daniel Wu plays his repressed sidekick who eventually goes Joker/Two Face on the whole lot.
Bad news on the doorstep:
Jackie Chan fans might be a bit disappointed this crime drama isn't a newer police story or a Shinjuku version of Rumble In The Bronx but you still get to see a few stunts here and there. By and large, picture is Blood Brothers starrin Fan Bing Bing (pic) instead of Shu Qi, with messier editin and scorin, though violence is intact.
Watch out for:
Wonderful smaller parts from Masaya Kato (slick prettyboy yakuza), Jack Kao (Taiwanese head honcho) and Naoto Takenaka (likeable police detective).
Amacam joker, berapa bintang lu mau kasi?
Three and a half. Could do better if there were a Fan Bing Bing sex scene with Jack Kao.
